Over the last few weeks flash flooding has dominated the UK news by inundating parts of Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, South Yorkshire, Cumbria and North Lincolnshire.

Thousands of families and businesses are facing the chaos and devastation that flooding can cause and our thoughts are with those affected during this difficult time.

With climate change expected to increase the frequency and severity of flash flooding throughout the country and with many existing properties having been built on floodplains investing in flood defence products now can protect your property in the future.

According to the environmental agency being proactive is the key to protecting your property and can enable you to reduce the level of water that can enter the property from the outset.

We’ve taken a look at some of the products available that can aid your water resistance efforts:

Flood barriers

Demountable flood barriers can be installed efficiently and with ease when a flood warning is issued in your local area. Depending on the severity of the flood it may defend the property for a limited period but even in the severest conditions this expect time can be invaluable. The product itself slides into two permanent vertical slots which are fixed to the wall either side of the door creating a flood defence barrier.

Flood doors

An alternative to the flood barrier is a flood composite door that protects your home against up to 0.6 metres of water. Such doors come in a wide range of styles and colours and have been fully tested and certified.

Tanking

Tanking is a liquid that can be pasted onto the walls and floors of your property and is often used in basements and sometimes ground floors. It bonds to masonry and creates a waterproof layer preventing flood water from entering.

Non-return valves

Non-return valves only allow flow in one direction and are used for toilets and showers ensuring that there is no black-flow from sewage or waste water into the property in the event of a flood. The valves themselves automatically close in flood conditions immediately protecting the property.

Vent covers

Vent covers are an affordable and easily installed flood defence product. They are screwed into the wall surrounding airbricks on the property and will stop flood water from leaking into the property through said bricks.
