INVESTING TODAY IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY WORKFORCE OF TOMORROW

Investing today in the construction industry workforce of tomorrow

With workforce shortfalls expected in the construction industry in the near future, here at Westone Housing we’re investing in the young people of today as the workforce of tomorrow with our apprenticeship scheme.

With workforce shortfalls expected in the construction industry in the near future, here at Westone Housing we’re investing in the young people of today as the workforce of tomorrow with our apprenticeship scheme.

We believe gaining practical experience whilst studying towards qualifications can provide our young employees with the best grounding for their future career, whilst providing us with a talented, capable workforce of experienced and qualified individuals who can not only enable the future sustainability of our business but also support the industry as a whole.

Introducing our apprentices

Meet Mark

Mark is a valued member of our team and started his time with us back in the summer of 2018 on his year 10 work experience. We were so impressed with Mark’s work ethics and can-do attitude over the two weeks he was with us that once his placement had finished we offered him some hours over weekends and school holidays.

This casual arrangement has continued until recently when Mark completed his GCSEs and finished school and we were able to offer him a permanent full-time position along with the opportunity to undertake a carpentry level 2 diploma on day release at Peterborough Regional College.

“This is such a good opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to becoming a fully-fledged carpenter, thank you Westone.”

Meet Jack

Jack is a talented member of the team who joined us after finishing his GCSEs two years ago, he’s just started his second year at Peterborough Regional College and we couldn’t be prouder of his ongoing achievements.

Like Mark, Jack is also studying carpentry level 2 diploma on a day release arrangement. Here at Westone we feel the skills learnt in carpentry provide a good foundation for the many tasks, and not purely timber based, found across the construction industry. We believe it is beneficial not only to the employee, but also to our customers and consequently Westone Housing if our workforce is multi-skilled.

“I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship, I definitely made the right choice and am looking forward to being a qualified member of the Westone team.”

Being an apprentice

As mentioned both Mark and Jack are studying the level 2 carpentry diploma. They will also be completing the new city and guilds level 2 NVQ standard, a recognised qualification in the industry which enables the competency of the candidate to also be assessed. At the end of their course they will both have to complete a practical assessment of their skills by an external assessor, unaffiliated with both the college and ourselves as the employer. This is of a pass or fail nature and ultimately keeps high standards within the industry.

Their training involves both theory and practical tasks both in a workshop environment and onsite observations of work plus reviews by a Peterborough Regional College assessor.

With both Mark and Jack studying at Peterborough Regional College, we use this local centre of further education for our apprentices as we feel the lecturers have a likeminded approach to ourselves, is local to our business and offers the best provisions and facilities in the area. Since 2014 all our apprentices have passed their qualifications and gone onto develop their careers within Westone Housing.
